Storms Delay Launch of Washington Briefing

Severe thunderstorms and high winds, along with an associated power failure at the PCA and ACPA offices in Skokie, Ill., last Friday, delayed the launch of the Washington Briefing.

In other scheduling news, the Washington Briefing will take a break from its weekly publishing schedule this Friday, August 31, as both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives continue their August recess.

Lawmakers of both chambers are scheduled to re-convene on September 4. Look for the next issue of the Washington Briefing on Friday, September 7.

Ailing Senator Schedules Public Appearance

Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD), a long time advocate for infrastructure investment, is scheduled to speak tomorrow at the Sioux Falls Convention Center, his first public event since being stricken by a debilitating brain hemorrhage in December, according to news reports.

Johnson, 60, underwent brain surgery and months of therapy to regain his speech and mobility after suffering a rare brain hemorrhage in December.

He remains weak on his right side and uses a wheelchair at times, but he has been working on Senate business from home, aides say.

At this writing, sources say the Senator still plans to run for re-election. "He's definitely intending to run. That's his intention," Johnson chief of staff Drey Samuelson told CBS News. But "intending" to run and actually announcing a reelection bid are two different things, the report said.
